Embouchure

Dear Susumu Tomizawa,

Thank you for your email!

Anyone can play the flute, no matter if they have thick or thin lips! It is all about having patience with trial and error. Try adjusting the placement of the lip plate on your bottom lip a little at a time. The general recommendation is to start with the edge of the lip plate directly at the bottom of your bottom lip - where your skin meets your lip. That could be too low for you, so try moving it up a tiny bit until you find the best spot. Remember to make very, very small adjustments. A small movement can drastically change your sound! It might help to watch some videos of different flutists to see how they have adjusted the lip plate placement for themselves. You might find that the best location for you is a little bit higher up on the lip than what Sir James does and that is ok. Just do what works best for you!

I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,

Amy Pribulick
